A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.

A Future Secured

This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.

“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”

Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
