Forest's Striker Fires a Brace as The Reds Round Off European Campaign with Win over Ferencvaros

Igor Jesus celebrating
Igor Jesus has now scored 11 goals in every tournament for the club this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' European strike puts Forest in control.
  • Striker adds a third with a clinical effort in the latter period.
  • James McAtee caps a great display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as the Premier League side concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a place in the knockout round play-offs and entered this fixture with a small chance of making the league's elite, although they required other matches to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans belief that their side can navigate the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

Forest broke the deadlock in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead shortly after – the striker squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the season.

Jesus' eleventh goal came early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the backline and then drive an effort past the shot-stopper.

That goal killed off Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead Forest scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the hapless Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League qualifying round lottery takes place on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest might face either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another stride forward, but it is a good one."

Team Breakdown: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in Europe this season with six of his 11 goals coming in the Europa League.

This double also means he has scored three goals in his previous two outings and the threat of competition for his place in attack could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this match from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent finishes and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his speed and movement.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with James McAtee turning in his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their loyalty or honesty. It is just go and show your quality.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
