🔗 Share this article The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites. As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder. His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara. Overcoming Early Hurdles Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract. Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said. An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament. A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration. Influences and Playing Style Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye. His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes. Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted. Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham. On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line. “The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.” Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
