"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several famous supporters have openly coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a close gang. Their videos frequently depict them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Historic Nod

The group are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project came out of a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
