This Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Seeks to Curb the Influence Against Speculators

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store stocked with special items. Fans will find products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the institution's theme. The big draw, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus for the pop-up. The store is scheduled from the physical location and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

Pokécology Behind the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited tome packed with stunning artwork that show creatures in their wild environments. It's essentially is what an in-world scientist might publish once adventurers submit their data, or what Charles Darwin might have created if the famous islands were populated by Pidgeys rather than finches. Part of the charm stems from the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate scientific study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Promo Card Stand Out

It is common for The Pokémon Company to release promos celebrating big events and brand collaborations. Many of these collector items often feature the iconic electric rodent who serves as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new promotion apart however, is the unusually large dimensions. Although exact measurements were not immediately shared, its distribution will certainly be strictly limited, with fans limited to only a single card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Activity

Per an official statement, some of the pop-up items may also be available outside the institution itself. However, broader availability will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase the card via the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those feeling left out, there is an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases made in the Museum shop and its web shop, including Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement notes.
